The Koenigsegg Regera is a unique car, even amidst the growing crowd of hybrid hypercars from manufacturers large and small. It features a direct-drive twin-turbo V8 incorporating a small but potent battery pack to give the car its ability to reach 249 mph (400 kph) in just 31.49 seconds. The goal isn't extended range as much it's an extreme punch of performance from its three electric motors.
"It's very important that we have full power available at all times with the Regera, because we can also use the Regera on the track and therefore of course you would like to have the full torque of the car at all times," explains Jonas Voss, the Director of EV Propulsion Systems for Koenigsegg.
Voss also points out that they tested multiple batteries from approximately 20 manufacturers and found that the large cells offered by Rimac had twice the power of the next closest competitor, which is how Rimac got the job to supply the batteries. The carbon fiber battery pack, which is a gorgeous piece, has six modules of 64 cells for 384 cells.
"The cells [we use] are used in Formula One because of the very high power density," says Voss. "The price is approximately 100 times higher than a normal cell you'd see on the market."
Because the price is so high and the use-case so specific it's unlikely your next crossover will have these batteries.
