What The 3D-Printed Czinger 21C And SR-71 Blackbird Have In Common

It’s easy to be swayed by performance numbers and dramatically aerodynamic shape. Few vehicles cut through the air so sharply or accelerate so swiftly, but how the CZinger 21C literally came together is the bigger story here. Most of the vehicle was 3D printed out of advanced materials including titanium and aluminum.

We went to Czinger’s factory in Southern California to see how these vehicles are built, which you can see in the video above. The main chassis of the vehicle is a modular design made up of 3D printed titanium and aluminum pieces joined together with other materials, including carbon fiber. The result is impressive and, though it’s a production car, the production method is the key feature here and points the way towards a new way of vehicle development that relies less on expensive molds and tooling. 

While we’re here, though, it’s worth pointing out the numbers. Individuals in this two-seat hypercar sit in a tandem configuration and the low resistance helps the vehicle reach 60 mph from a dead stop in just 1.9 seconds. Also helping are the two front-mounted EV motors powering the front wheels, producing 240 horsepower. A 2.88-liter twin-turbo V8 provides the other 950 horsepower. If you were curious, that motor puts out nearly 330 horsepower per liter.
